Located in Providence, Rhode Island, Brown’s campus sprawls into surrounding neighborhoods; making it difficult to distinguish the boundaries of the school. Brown offers one of the most well-balanced academic and social experiences in the country, allowing students to design their own major while studying abroad. There is a comprehensive academic environment with over 175 majors; with Biology, Economics, and International Relations being the most popular. Though it is reputed to be one of the less competitive Ivy League schools, Brown students are in no way slackers. Special academic opportunities at Brown include group independent study projects and the ability to take up to four courses at the Rhode Island School of Design; in additional to double majors, dual degrees, honors programs, and internship assignments. Brown boats 350 student organizations, the most popular being those that are musically, theatrically, politically and service oriented. Intramural sports are a large part of student life at Brown; students can choose to participate in basketball, flag football, ice hockey, and volleyball. The student body is extremely diverse, and mostly liberal, with 33% minority students and only 5% of students hailed from Rhode Island itself. “This is one of the most intelligent and creative collections of students in the world, “explains a Brown scholar. “I learn not only from lectures but from discussions over meals and in my dorm room.”
