COLLEGE OF WILLIAM AND MARY, RANKED # 33

Average GPA: 4.0

Average SAT score: 1850 ~ 2160

Situated in Williamsburg, the College of William and Mary is the second-oldest college in America, home to many Colonial buildings that have been restored to their original appearance. The school is one of just 8 universities considered “Public Ivy”, and is ranked 6th among all public schools. The basic tenets of academics at W&M are research, relationships with faculty, programs that are interdisciplinary, and community service – probably in that order. Common class size is 10 to 19 students, so close work with faculty is encouraged and easily accessed. Popular majors include Business Administration, Government, and Psychology. W&M has over 400 student organizations that range from performance groups to service groups. Amazingly enough, a quarter to one third of the student body belongs to the Greek system, so parties thrown by the 18 fraternities and 11 sororities are popular. W&M is an ethnically diverse student body; students describe themselves as “independent thinkers” and “highly motivated.” The school also boasts impressive statistics when it comes to student post-grad plans. The Wall Street Journal ranks W&M as one of the top 10 “feeder” schools for elite graduate schools.

Famous Alumni: Glenn Close (actress), Jon Stewart (host of The Daily Show), David Brown (Columbia Space Shuttle Astronaut)
