Rice is a relatively small research university with 3,300 undergrad students on 300 acres of land. The campus is gorgeous, and located 3 miles from downtown Houston. With an endowment of $3.99 billion USD and only a small student population, the endowment per student is among the highest in the nation. There are 119 majors offered at Rice, with biochemistry, cell biology, architecture, and engineering being the most recognized. The school is academically rigorous, but students claim that “there’s a lot of attention from professors.” Studying abroad is a popular option at Rice, as there are over 500 programs to choose from in over 70 countries. The student population is quite diverse, with 40% of minorities; and despite its location in the South, students describe the political atmosphere as “very” liberal leaning. There are many events hosted by different residential colleges, among which “public parties” – Night of Decadence, Halloween lingerie party, Bacchanalia, etc – are open to all Rice students. Rice lists 215 official clubs, and 14 Division I athletic teams. Off campus, students can visit the Galleria and Katy Malls, choose from plenty of restaurants, or head to Galveston Beach, which is just a 45 min drive away.
