UPenn is the oldest university in the nation; the campus encompasses a national historic district, populated by Gothic architecture. Strong liberal arts and strong pre-professional education meet at this large private Ivy League institution. UPenn’s four undergraduate schools offer more than 85 majors, the most popular being Finance, Economics, and Nursing. There are also 12 graduate and professional schools, which undergrads may take classes at through Penn’s “One University” policy. When it comes to student life, UPenn has more than 350 student organizations, and many with historical roots: such as The Philomathean Society (founded in 1813), and the Mask and Wig Club (founded in 1888). More than a quarter of all undergrads join the 49 fraternities and sororities at UPenn, so Greek life is relatively important. There are 31 sports teams that compete in Division I sports; football is the most popular, while basketball, field hockey, and lacrosse also garner attention. UPenn has high diversity in the student body, with 10% international students and one-third of the students being African-American, Hispanic or Asian. According to Penn students, they are “very focused” on academics and their careers. Students who feel they can thrive in this high-achieving environment will want to try hard – and cross their fingers – to get into this highly selective university.
