Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University of Virginia is ranked as second among public schools by U.S. News & World Report. The school offers up to 192 majors, while some of the more popular majors – such as English, Commerce, and History – have received national attention for the strength of their curricula. The school ranks high in ethnic diversity at 25%, with 28% students from out of state. UVA has over 700 clubs and organizations, and has 15 sorority houses and 30 fraternity houses. Greek life makes up about 30 % of the undergraduate population, so it’s a big deal. Football is arguably the most popular of the 23 Division I varsity programs that are part of the Atlantic Coast Conference, though the basketball team has had notable success as well. Charlottesville, where the campus is located, has in the past been rated as the best place to live, thanks to its rich history, great food, and abundant entertainment. While UVA is challenging academically, students say they get a lot of support from their peers. The campus is also a site of numerous architectural highlights – some of the gardens surrounding the Academical Village have been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO alongside the Taj Mahal and Great Wall of China.

Famous Alumni: Tiki Barber (running back for NY Giants), Timothy Koogle (former CEO of Yahoo), John Snow (U.S. Secretary of the Treasury)
