UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, RANKED # 46

Average GPA: 3.7

Average SAT score: 1630 ~ 1970

The University of Washington is situated at the heart of Seattle, and has a campus that is almost one square mile large. It offers 273 majors and prides itself especially in its biology, business, engineering and architecture programs. The university’s general education requirements are centered on English Composition and three other subject areas that are entitled “Visual, Learning and Performing Arts” (VLPA). UW is not a geographically diverse campus, with 83% of students hailing from Washington State. Less than 10 % of the student population is African-American or Hispanic, while 28% are Asian or Pacific Islander. On the whole, UW students are known for being outdoorsy and social, and generally “more liberal.” The school also has 525 student groups and organizations, and a full schedule of events during the year that often include the greater Seattle community. While only 10% of the student body is officially part of a fraternity or sorority, the Greek community still has a big presence, hosting parties and fundraisers all year round. The UW Huskies athletic program consists of 19 sports that compete in Division I of the Pac-10: football, men’s basketball, and women’s volleyball are among national competitors. In sum, UW offers strong academics and vast resources – especially in the sciences – and a hoppin’ social life. And if you ever get sick of it all – you have the option to run away to the surrounding mountains for a weekend!
